If you want to read a book that leaves you so sad that your mind cant even process it, this is the one. This book was amazing, not only because it made me feel something, but it enlightened me on a disease that is not normally well told.
Sammie, a super relatable teenager like myself, has Niemann-Pick Type C, a disorder that deteriorates your memory and decrease bodily functions. This was her story and her memories, well the ones she could remember. It is about learning how to live, fall in love, and how to be a teenager that is slowly dying.
Sammie goes through the teenage struggles such as confessing her liking to her crush and dealing with learning social cues. To an outside reader at first, Sammie seemed perfectly healthy. As the book progressed, the sickness did as well. I think that is why the ending was so startling.
“I think people fake that they’re having fun a lot of the time in photos, because they want people to think they’re having fun. Well, that’s not life, is it?” -Sammie
This is my lesson from this wonderful book, what is yours?
